Composite fencing is defined by what it contains—and how consistently it is made.

Material Formulation

High-quality composite materials rely on tightly controlled blends engineered for dimensional stability. Inferior products use inconsistent fillers that introduce weakness, moisture sensitivity, and unpredictable movement over time.

Density and Weight

Properly manufactured composite has mass. This density contributes to rigidity, sound dampening, and visual presence. Lightweight composite products lack internal cohesion and are more susceptible to warping and surface degradation.

Surface Integrity

A quality composite fence maintains a uniform surface finish that resists excessive fading, chalking, and textural breakdown. Inconsistent surface treatments lead to patchy appearance and accelerated aging.

Material Formulation

Precision extrusion and quality control are essential. Variations in production result in boards that differ in size, color, and behavior—issues that become increasingly visible as the fence ages.

Composite fencing demands precision in installation.
Composite materials expand, contract, and react to temperature differently than wood or metal. If installed without proper allowances, stress builds within the system—leading to bowing, separation, or surface failure.
  • Post Spacing and Support: Composite fencing requires correct post spacing and structural support. Overextended spans introduce flex and long-term distortion.
  • Expansion Allowances: Clearances must be intentionally incorporated. Composite boards installed too tightly will move against each other, creating pressure that leads to deformation.
  • Fastening Systems: Fasteners and attachment methods must allow controlled movement. Restrictive or improper fastening compromises structural integrity and appearance.
  • Foundation and Subgrade Stability: A stable foundation is critical. Ground movement transfers directly into the fence structure, amplifying material stress over time.

Environmental Considerations

Composite fencing performs best in controlled environments where temperature swings and moisture exposure are predictable.

While composite resists insects and surface rot, some formulations can absorb moisture and react to prolonged humidity. Environmental suitability must be evaluated carefully.
Composite is not intended for applications requiring fine architectural detail or minimal movement tolerance. It is best suited for modern boundaries where uniformity and visual weight are the priority.
